How to Wear a Solitaire and a Wedding Band Together
How to wear a solitaire and a wedding band on the same finger in harmony: order, width, height and colour. We explain how to choose the two rings together.

Short answer: If a solitaire and a wedding band are worn on the same finger, the most common order is the band below (closer to the hand) and the solitaire above. For the two rings to sit well together, look at three things: the same gold colour, similar band widths, and a solitaire height that lets the band sit alongside it. With halo or low-set solitaires, a curved band that fits under the solitaire gives the best match.
Which goes on first?
In Western tradition, the wedding band goes on first, so it is closer to the heart, with the solitaire above it. In Turkey, too, this order is common on the ring finger of the left hand after the wedding. Some people prefer to wear the solitaire on the other hand or on another finger. There is no fixed rule; the arrangement that feels comfortable and that you like is the right one. Finger and hand details: which finger does a ring go on.
Three rules for a well-matched pair
1. The same gold colour
Two rings side by side on the same finger look calmest in the same colour: a white band with a white solitaire, yellow with yellow. Different colours can also look very chic as a deliberate choice, but it is worth seeing them side by side before you decide. Choosing a gold colour.
2. A similar width
If the solitaire’s shank is 2 mm, a 2–2.5 mm band makes the two rings look like one. A very wide band can overshadow a slim solitaire. Slim wedding bands.
3. Height and fit
If the solitaire’s stone sits high (in a cathedral setting, for example), a straight band slides under the solitaire and the two rings sit side by side without a gap. If the stone sits low or there is a halo, a gap may remain between a straight band and the solitaire; in that case, a curved (notched) band that fits under the solitaire is the best solution. Choosing the two rings together
The easiest way is to think about the band when you buy the solitaire: the same gold colour, the same width and shapes that fit together are planned from the start. If the solitaire was bought earlier, just bring it with you when choosing the band, or send us a photo of it; we will suggest a band that matches.
Watch out for rubbing: two rings worn side by side on the same finger for years rub against each other. Having a stone-set band and the solitaire’s shank of the same hardness (both 14 karat, for example) and getting them polished now and then keeps both rings beautiful for a long time.
Size
When two rings are worn together on the same finger, they wrap more of the finger; so if you will wear them together, decide the band’s size by trying it with the solitaire. The same size is usually enough, but wide pairs may need half a size up. Ring size.
