What Is a Half Eternity Ring? How It Differs from a Full Eternity

Short answer: A half eternity ring has diamonds set only on the upper half of the ring, while the lower half is plain gold. From above it looks like a full eternity ring; but because there are no stones on the palm side, it is more comfortable, it can be resized later and it costs less for the same stone size. It is very popular both as a wedding band and as a companion ring next to a solitaire.
Half eternity versus full eternity
| Half eternity | Full eternity | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the stones are | Upper half | The whole band |
| Look from above | The same | The same |
| Palm side | Plain gold, comfortable | Stone-set |
| Resizing | Possible | Usually not possible |
| Price | More affordable | About twice the stones |

Half eternity ring designs
- Prong-set half eternity: each stone is held by tiny prongs, so the stones catch the most light. The most classic form. Half eternity design.
- Channel-set half eternity: the stones sit between two metal walls; a smooth surface with nothing to catch.
- Baguette half eternity: baguettes side by side; a modern, calm line of light. Baguette half eternity.
- Marquise or mixed half eternity: more unusual designs with marquise, oval or round stones in sequence.
- Curved half eternity: with a gentle curve in the middle; it sits under a halo or a large solitaire.
Stone size and total carat
In a half eternity ring, carat is the combined weight of all the stones. A 0.30-carat half eternity is slim and delicate; a 1-carat one is bold and brilliant. The bigger the stones, the more eye-catching the ring, but the setting also gets higher. For a half eternity ring worn every day or next to a solitaire, medium-sized stones are more comfortable. What does total carat mean?
Who is a half eternity ring for?
- As a wedding band: ideal for those who want a stone-set band without the resizing limits of a full eternity ring. Wedding band styles.
- Next to a solitaire: a slim half eternity the same width as the solitaire makes the two rings look like one. Wearing a solitaire and a band together.
- On its own: as a promise ring, an anniversary ring or a gift to yourself.
Why does comfort on the palm side matter? In a full eternity ring, the stones on the palm side rub when you hold a bag or work with your hands. In a half eternity ring this part is plain gold, so it is both more comfortable and the stones are better protected.
What to check when choosing
- Stone matching: the stones in the row should have the same size and colour.
- Length of the row: the row of stones can cover between a third and a half of the ring; a longer row keeps the stones visible even when the ring turns.
- Gold colour: the same colour if it will be worn with a solitaire.
- Size: even though it can be adjusted, getting the size right from the start is best. Ring size.
