How Many Carats Should a Solitaire Be?

Short answer: There is no single right answer to how many carats a solitaire ring should be. The right carat is decided by hand shape, daily life, style and budget together. A general guide: 0.30–0.50 carat gives a delicate, simple look, 0.70–1 carat a noticeable, classic one, 1.50–2 carats a glamorous one, and 3 carats and above a bold one. The best way is to see the stone on a hand at true scale.

Stone size by carat

The table below shows approximate diameters for a well-cut round diamond:

Carat Approximate diameter Look on the finger
0.30 4.3 mm Slim, delicate, very simple
0.50 5.1–5.2 mm Delicate and noticeable
0.75 5.8 mm Balanced, noticeable
1 6.4–6.5 mm The classic solitaire
1.50 7.3–7.4 mm Glamorous
2 8.1 mm Very noticeable
3 9.3 mm Bold

Note: going from 1 to 2 carats doubles the weight, but the diameter grows by only about 1.7 mm. More: the 1-carat solitaire and what is a carat.

Four questions to help you decide

1. What are her hands like?

On slim, long fingers even a small stone stands out; on fuller or wider fingers the same stone looks smaller. The wider the finger, the less of it the stone covers. Suggestions by shape: choosing a ring for your finger type.

2. What is her daily life like?

For someone who works a lot with their hands, does sport or often wears gloves, a 0.50–1 carat stone in a low setting is more practical. Large stones in high prongs knock into things more easily.

3. What is her style?

Look at the jewellery she wears every day: someone who wears fine chains and tiny earrings will love a delicate solitaire, and someone who likes bold statement pieces will love a bigger stone.

4. How should the budget be split?

Do not compromise on cut to gain carats. What the eye notices on the finger is the stone’s sparkle; a badly cut large stone looks duller than a well-cut small one. The 4C balance.

Choices that make the stone look bigger

  • Elongated shapes: Oval, pear and marquise look bigger than a round stone at the same carat. Oval solitaire.
  • A slim band: A slim band makes the stone look bigger by comparison.
  • Halo: The small stones around it make the centre stone look bigger than it is. Halo solitaire.
  • Lab-grown diamond: Lets you choose a bigger or cleaner stone for the same budget.

Try it at true scale: In our ring designer you can see stones from 0.50 to 3 carats on the same hand, in their true proportions. In the images, the stone is placed by millimetre calculation on a finger 17 mm wide.

Frequently asked questions

Which carat is chosen most for a solitaire?

It depends entirely on budget and style. Half a carat is a delicate start and 1 carat gives the classic solitaire look; stones between them, at 0.70–0.90 carat, are also chosen often.

Does a 0.50-carat solitaire look small?

No. 0.50 carat is about 5.1 mm across and looks delicate and noticeable on a slim band. It especially suits slim fingers.

Can a 2-carat solitaire be worn every day?

Yes, but because it sits higher, you need to be more careful about knocks. A setting with strong prongs or a bezel makes everyday wear more comfortable.

Does carat or quality matter more?

The two should be balanced. The most efficient way is to make room for carat by being flexible on colour and clarity to a level the eye cannot see, without compromising on cut.
