A 1 carat round solitaire measures about 6.5 mm across. We explain how it looks on the finger, its size in each shape and what changes the price at the same carat.

Short answer: A 1-carat solitaire diamond is a single stone weighing 0.2 grams. In a well-cut round diamond, 1 carat is about 6.4–6.5 mm across; on the finger it is the noticeable, classic look people call a “true solitaire”. Elongated shapes such as oval, pear and marquise look bigger at the same carat. Besides carat, the price of a 1-carat diamond is set by its cut, colour, clarity and certificate.
How many mm is 1 carat? Sizes by shape
Carat is a unit of weight; how big a stone looks is decided by its shape and cut proportions. For well-proportioned stones, the approximate sizes are:
| Shape | Approximate size at 1 carat |
|---|---|
| Round | 6.4–6.5 mm across |
| Oval | 7.7 × 5.7 mm |
| Pear (teardrop) | 8–8.5 × 5.5 mm |
| Marquise | 10 × 5 mm |
| Princess | 5.5 × 5.5 mm |
| Emerald | 7 × 5 mm |
These values are averages; a stone’s depth and proportions change the size by a few tenths of a millimetre. The exact size is written on the stone’s certificate. More: what is a carat.
How does a 1-carat solitaire look on the finger?
An average woman’s ring finger is about 16–18 mm wide. A 6.5 mm stone covers a little more than a third of that width: it draws attention without looking heavy. That is why 1 carat is both comfortable for everyday wear and the look that comes to mind when people say “solitaire”.
The easiest way to see how the stone will sit on your finger is our ring designer: choose the shape and gold colour, and see a 1-carat stone on a hand at true scale.
The difference between 0.90 and 1 carat
Diamond prices do not rise with carat in a straight line; they jump at round values such as 1 carat. A 0.90-carat stone is only about 0.2 mm smaller than 1 carat; the difference is almost invisible on the finger but can be noticeable in the price. It is a path often taken by those who want to make the most of their budget.
What sets the price of a 1-carat diamond?
- Cut: The same 1 carat sparkles brightly when well cut and looks dull when badly cut. Cut quality.
- Colour: The price difference between grades D to H is large; G–H colour looks white when worn. What does G colour mean?
- Clarity: VS is eye clean; VVS and FL cost more, but the difference is seen only under a loupe.
- Shape: The round cut is the most expensive shape per carat.
- Origin: A lab-grown diamond is noticeably more affordable than a natural diamond with the same characteristics.
1 carat, or a cleaner 0.90? If the budget is limited, choosing a better stone at 0.90 carat, rather than compromising a lot on colour and clarity at 1 carat, often gives a more beautiful ring. What the eye notices on the finger is the stone’s sparkle, not 0.1 carat.
