Diamond Earring Styles: From Studs to Drops
Solitaire studs, halo, drop, hoop and baguette: we explain the diamond earring styles, which days and face shapes they suit, and what to check when choosing.
3 min readUpdated: October 7, 2026
Short answer: The most loved diamond earring designs are: the solitaire stud (a single stone sitting on the ear), halo, drop, hoop, baguette and dangling earrings. For everyday wear, solitaire studs and small hoops stand out; for special occasions, drops and long dangling designs. When choosing, the face shape, the total carat and the security of the earring back are decisive.
Diamond earring designs
Solitaire stud earrings
A single diamond in each ear; the most timeless and most worn earrings. They suit every outfit and every age. How to choose solitaire earrings · solitaire stud design.
Halo earrings
A ring of small diamonds around the centre stone; it makes a small stone look bigger and more brilliant.
Drop earrings
A small stone above and a swinging pear or oval diamond below. They catch the light as you move; the graceful finishing touch for special occasions. Drop earring design.
Hoop earrings
Small hoops set with diamonds along the front; the ones that sit close to the ear are also called “huggies”. Practical and chic for everyday wear. Hoop earring design.
Baguette earrings
The clean, modern light of rectangular baguette stones, as bars or rows. Baguette earring guide.
Dangling earrings
Rows of diamonds or geometric forms hanging down; the glamorous choice for evening events and weddings.
Earrings by face shape
| Face shape | Earrings that suit it |
|---|---|
| Round | Drops and long dangling earrings; they make the face look longer |
| Long (slim oval) | Solitaire studs, halos and hoops; they balance the face |
| Heart | Drops that widen at the bottom |
| Square | Hoops and drops with rounded lines |
| Oval | Almost every design |
Carat: the “pair” total in earrings
For earrings, carat is usually given as the total of both stones: “1-carat solitaire earrings” means a 0.50-carat stone in each ear. Because earrings sit close to the face but away from the eye, being one grade more flexible on colour and clarity usually cannot be noticed. What is a carat?
Earring backs
- Butterfly (classic) back: the most common; easy to put on.
- Screw back: the post is threaded, so the earring does not come off by itself; the safest choice for large stones.
- Locking (clip) back: on hoops and drops it closes with a hinge; secure and practical.
Everyday or special occasions? For earrings worn every day, designs that sit on the ear and do not catch (solitaire studs, small hoops) with a screw back are the most comfortable. For special occasions you can be bold with drops and dangling designs. They can also be chosen as a set to match a ring and a necklace. Diamond sets.
