Short answer: A gold solitaire ring comes in three colours: yellow, white and rose gold. White gold makes the stone look whiter and bigger; yellow gold gives a warm, classic look; rose gold looks soft and romantic. With yellow and rose gold, making the prongs from white gold is a common way to keep the stone looking white. Diamond rings are made in 14 and 18 karat gold.
Three gold colours, three different solitaires
White gold
The colour that brings out a diamond’s whiteness and sparkle the most. Because the stone and the metal share the same cool tone, the stone looks bigger and whiter. White gold’s bright white colour comes from rhodium plating, which may need renewing over time. Does white gold turn yellow?
Yellow gold
Classic, warm and timeless. In recent years it has become very popular again for solitaires. The warm tone of yellow gold can reflect into the stone, so in a yellow gold solitaire even a slightly warmer stone such as H colour looks white.
Rose gold
Soft and romantic, with the pink tone that copper gives it. It suits every skin tone and looks equally beautiful in vintage and modern designs. With rose gold, too, you can be one grade more flexible on the stone’s colour.
Yellow gold solitaires with white prongs
In solitaires with a yellow or rose gold band, it is common to make the prongs and the head that hold the stone from white gold. That way the area around the stone stays white and the stone does not reflect the yellow tone, while the band keeps its warm colour. It is the loveliest compromise for those who want both the warmth of yellow gold and the whiteness of the stone.
14 karat or 18 karat?
| 14 carat | 18 carat | |
|---|---|---|
| Pure gold content | 58.5% | 75% |
| Hardness | Harder, more scratch-resistant | Softer |
| Colour | A little lighter | Deeper and warmer (in yellow and rose) |
| Price | More affordable | Higher |
For a solitaire worn every day, the durability of 14 karat is an advantage. More: 14 karat or 18 karat?
Matching stone colour with gold colour
- White gold: G colour and above, so the stone’s whiteness shows fully.
- Yellow gold: even H–I colour looks white; you can put the savings into carat or cut.
- Rose gold: H colour offers a good balance.

Think about the wedding band too: if the solitaire and the band will be worn on the same finger, the same gold colour gives the most harmonious look. Different colours can also look very chic as a deliberate choice. Choosing a gold colour.
